Only patients with an appointment will be allowed in the office. Call or use the patient portal to schedule an appointment or otherwise communicate with us. Please be sure to leave a message if you are directed to voicemail.

If you have covid-related symptoms OR a known recent exposure to COVID-19, please do not come into the office. We will be happy to schedule a virtual assessment.

Guests are limited to one parent/guardian or patient advocate per patient.

(8/8): Katie: “Our story as a couple and the story of mosaic are so closely intertwined, we can't really talk about them separately. We jump into our projects with both feet and all of our being and figure it out. That’s both of our experiences of relationship too; we may not have the exact same personal mission but with the collaboration of our personal missions kind of moving in the same direction… I don't think this is new to either of us.”

Mixhi: “I love that we have similar energies in the way that we create things like organizations in that neither of us sit and plan for a long time and then implement. We're both like “let's jump in!” We may do some pre-planning but we're both jumping in and see how this works. One of our mottos is “hold on I'm gonna try something!”

(7/8) Mixhi: “I love that Katie often doesn't see the barriers, the things standing in our way to get somewhere. She just walks right through them and invites me along to these magical places I didn’t know we could go. I also love their incredible capacity for acceptance and their commitment to loving unconditionally. I treasure sitting with her in the rare moments when she she’s struggling to live into these qualities because I get to experience the depth of her commitment and watch her capacity to love expand as she walks through the moment. When we create together, there is always a foundation of expanding love and acceptance within ourselves and the world around us.

Katie: “One of the things that I appreciate about Mixhi is their ability to think abundantly. When I work with Mixhi, when I live with Mixhi, the possibilities are endless and that is an experience that I absolutely love. Mixhi’s heart is huge and their love for other humans, their commitment to seeing things that are hurtful in the world and wanting to change them, and then not only wanting to change them but actually doing it. I see Mixhi as an incredible gift to me as a member of the LGBTQ community because I see that they were paving the way for me to be able to come out and to live my life authentically even before I could even live authentically to myself.”

(6/8) WEDDING DAY!

Katie: “While my personal experience with the institution of marriage has been good, I have struggled with it as an institution. It has a long history of not being equal and being oppressive. I'm willing to play in the structure of marriage in so far as it gives us an opportunity to celebrate who we are to each other and celebrate what our relationship has already birthed, and to make a commitment to continue to create together! It's not a celebration of beginning, it's a celebration of deepening and expanding. In a funny kind of way getting married is an opportunity to have a ritual and to have a party and to invite others to celebrate love and their own love and all the love.

It feels really important to me in our current political climate that we create opportunities for
people to celebrate love in the face of all the things. Roe V. Wade being overturned, marriage
equality being threatened, trans rights and trans lives being threatened… I feel like the more we
can focus and re-energize by getting into a loving space again, celebrate love and look forward
with some hope… We've literally had people comment when they RSVP that witnessing us
together gives them hope. That’s huge!”

Mixhi: “For much of my life, I really didn’t expect that marriage equality would exist in my lifetime. I think that led to me to an understanding that there are two aspects of marriage, spiritual/personal commitment and a legal contract. Some marriages embrace both, some only one or the other and until recent years the legal contract wasn’t available to many of us. The spiritual journey of marriage feels sacred to me. The legal aspect feels suspect, and at the same time, I recognize that in our culture marriage comes with certain privileges, both legally and socially. It’s shorthand to the world we live in that says “We are family”. It also comes with cultural assumptions that require a lot of energy to overcome if they are not true for you. It’s been such a gift to explore this decision to get married with Katie and name the pieces we value and those we don’t.

(5/8) Katie: “We were friends for what seemed li

(5/8) Katie: “We were friends for what seemed like a really really really really really long time. Though I knew when I laid eyes on her at that bar in South Bend, the very first time we met at that networking event. I just knew.”

Mixhi: “And I think I knew too, and that was part of why it took so long to realize the depth of our relationship. It was a deep connection and maybe a little scary! Life was pretty complicated relationally for both of us in that moment and it just wasn't quite time.”

Katie: “And yeah, so even as we were thinking about the creation of Mosaic, we were not officially together.”

Mixhi: “We had a 10 year plan for creating Mosaic. We planned to write some books, lead some workshops and build up to full speed in 10 years. On epiphany (January 6th), 2015 we looked at a place that was for sale that we thought might be perfect for our future Mosaic. Our initial vision included a kind of a retreat center along with space for Katie to see patients and I could lead retreats. The timing wasn’t quite right for Mosaic yet, but we did start to understand more about the depth of our relationship!”

Katie: “We spent the next year dreaming into our 10 year plan for Mosaic. I started interviewing for post-residency jobs and it became clear folks wanted me and they would tolerate the folks I wanted to serve, but they weren’t going to change their culture to welcome my community. By the end of residency I was serving 80 folks who identified as trans or nonbinary and they were going to need a medical home after I graduated. So our 10 year plan turned into a 6 month plan.”

Mixhi: “Katie still had 6 months of residency left which took most of her energy, so I focused my energy on creating the organizational foundation of Mosaic. The experience of creating Mosaic with Katie was like nothing I’d ever experienced. We set our intentions and the Universe took over. We would talk about something one minute and it would manifest in the next minute. Our biggest challenge was to stay out of the way as the as the Universe worked its magic!”
